Alfred Wevers
Ernst Alfred Oskar Wevers (born June 20, 1875 in Gerresheim , † March 31, 1932 in Worms ) was a German lawyer and mayor of the city of Worms from 1908 to 1920 .
Election to mayor
The lawyer, born in Gerresheim in 1875, was previously the second mayor of the Holstein city of Itzehoe . In 1903, Wevers was chosen from among 22 competitors to succeed Gustav Kayser, who went to Bad Nauheim . Like his superior, Mayor Heinrich Köhler , Wevers was politically National Liberal and of Protestant denomination.
Term of office as alderman and mayor
Wevers took up his position as a salaried councilor, but due to his achievements and his legal qualifications in 1908, Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig gave him the character of mayor; this also against the background of wanting to keep him in Worms.
Wevers work in Worms was initially characterized by general administrative tasks; the really important things were decided by Köhler in his role as Lord Mayor. From 1915 onwards, however, there were disputes when Köhler got into a dispute with Wever's decisions that were not agreed with him. In the course of the First World War , the disputes culminated in a deep rift between Köhler and Wevers.
As part of the end of the First World War, the “Workers 'and Soldiers' Council” was formed on November 9, 1918, under whose chairman Albert Schulte Köhler was relieved of his office as Lord Mayor of the city of Worms. As in most other German cities, the impeachment was non-violent. From this point on, Wevers took over the official duties of his superior Koehler.
After the term of office
Under Wever's chairmanship, the “Worms Association for the Health Care of Poor and Sick Schoolchildren”, founded in 1888/1889, founded the “Hoher Darsberg” school camp. From this point on, around 60 school children found an opportunity there every year to recover and get well again. The school camp was supported by entrepreneurs from Worms and financial donations from the city of Worms.
Wevers opened the new savings bank building in cooperation with Köhler. He ended the opening ceremonies with the words: “Built high and deeply founded, this house stands on the foundation of love of home and citizenship, supported by the cornerstone of trust and respect: the shielding roof is honesty and loyalty. As a house spirit, however, may joy of creation and fulfillment of duty rule in him so that the word that we have written over our entrance gate continues to shine from the ridge of the house: Work is the citizen's ornament, blessing is the price of effort! ".
The house inscription mentioned is no longer there. The building, which is now under monument protection , now houses parts of the city administration.
As a result of the dispute with Köhler, Wevers resigned his mandate in 1920 before the end of his term of office, but continued to live in the building of the Sparkasse in the Moltkeanlage, today's Adenauerring, which was built under his aegis . As a licensed attorney, Wevers also worked as chairman of the supervisory board of "Wormser Kreditanstalt Aktiengesellschaft", founded in 1919, which was transferred to "Rheinlandbank in Bieberich am Rhein" in the following years.
Ernst Alfred Oskar Wevers died on March 31, 1932 in Worms.
