Alfredo Cristiani (* 22. November 1947 in San Salvador ) is a former politician and president in El Salvador .

Cristiani Burkard was born in 1947 as the son of a coffee producer . After attending a religious school in El Salvador, he studied in Washington DC at Georgetown University . After returning home, he worked in the family business.

In the 1980s he became a member of the right-wing party ARENA . After the elections on March 31, 1985, he succeeded Roberto D'Aubuisson Arrieta as party leader. The ARENA put him up in May 1988 as a candidate for the presidential election. He won the first-round election with a 53.8% share of the vote and became President of El Salvador on June 1, 1989.

During Cristiani's reign, negotiations between the FMLN and the government began on September 13, 1989 . On October 31, 1989 , nine people were murdered in a bomb attack on the Federación Nacional de Sindicatos de Trabajadores Salvadoreños (FENASTRAS), including the union official Febe Elizabeth Velasquez. On November 11, 1989, the FMLN began its third offensive and attacked the residential areas of the Salvadoran elite, Colonias San Benito and Escalón in northern San Salvador under the slogan Todos Al Tope . Whereupon the Fuerza Aérea Salvadoreña bombed the densely populated poor neighborhoods in northern San Salvador. Several hundred people died in the process. René Emilio Ponce , head of the FAES General Staff , ordered the murder of the Jesuits of the Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (UCA) and all witnesses, which is why on November 16, 1989 the six Jesuits Ignacio Ellacuría, Ignacio Martín-Baró , Segundo Montes , and Amando López , Juan Ramón Moreno , Joaquín López y López and the housekeeper Elba Julia Ramos and their daughter Celina were murdered. On January 16, 1992, President Cristiani and representatives of the Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) signed a peace treaty known as the Acuerdos de Paz de Chapultepec / Chapultepec Peace Accords in the Castillo de Chapultepec in Mexico City ended the twelve-year civil war in El Salvador. On November 13, 2008, the Spanish human rights organization Asociación pro derechos humanos de españa (APDHE) and the Center for Justice & Accountability (CJA) filed a complaint with the Audiencia Nacional de España against Christiani for the murders in the UCA on November 16, 1989. The lawsuit is directed against Christiani and 14 high-ranking military officials who ordered the massacre. The Audiencia Nacional can act because some of the victims were Spanish citizens or, in accordance with the principle of universal jurisdiction , because the crimes are not prosecuted in El Salvador. The examining magistrate Eloy Velasco is examining whether proceedings will be opened.
