Alfredo de Oro (born April 28, 1863 in Manzanillo ; † April 22 or 23, 1948 ) was a professional Cuban carom and pool player who won several world championships in both disciplines at the same time. As one of the few non-Americans, he was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Billiard Congress of America in 1967. In the Billiards Digest 50 Greatest Players of the Century he is listed as number 4.

biography

De Oro made his first public appearance as a professional at the 4th US National 15-Ball Championship in February 1887 in New York. From 1887 to 1908 he lost just one game of over 40 matches in 14.1 endlessly , winning the world championship 11 times. In 1893 he defeated the English Billiards Champion John Roberts Sen. in a competition in New York with 1,000: 927, a year later, in 1894, he won the Havana International Tournament . In November 1910 he won the 14.1 endless world championship in New York against Jerome R. Keogh with a maximum series of 81. In the same year de Oro was able to win the three-cushion championships in the USA three times. In 1912 he lost in Philadelphia in pool against James Matura from Denver , Colorado with 150: 136. In 1914 he was defeated by Charles R. Morin at the National Three Cushion Championships.

Private

His son Alfredo de Oro was an amateur player, he made it at the National Association of Amateur Billiard Players Championships in 1931 to the finals where he was defeated by Edward Lee .
