Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed ( Bengali আলী আহসান মুহাম্মদ মুজাহিদ Ālī Āhsān Muhāmmad Mujāhid ; born June 23, 1948 , † November 22, 2015 in Dhaka ) was a Bangladeshi politician ( Jamaat-e-Islami ).

Life

Mojaheed was Minister for Social Affairs from 2001 to 2006 in the government formed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jamaat-e-Islami. He was also Secretary General of the Jamaat-e-Islami.

After the parties had to go into the opposition after losing parliamentary elections and the new Awami League- led government set up a tribunal to deal with war crimes during the 1971 War of Independence , Mojaheed and other opposition leaders were brought to justice. In 2013 he was sentenced to death for war crimes . Among other things, he was charged with the murder of intellectuals. After President Abdul Hamid had rejected his mercy petition on November 21, 2015 Mojaheed was at 00:55 of November 22, 2015 together with the deputies Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury in the central prison of the capital Dhaka hanged .

While supporters of the government celebrated the executions with street parties, the government ordered tightened security measures, as the worst unrest to date since the country's independence had already occurred in 2013 after the verdict was announced, which resulted in the death of around 500 people. The opposition, which considers the trials to be politically motivated, called for a general strike . Human Rights Watch described the processes as unfair and inconsistent with the rule of law.
