Alison Mary Suttie, Baroness Suttie (born August 27, 1968 in Hawick , Scotland ) is a British politician of the Liberal Democrats . Since September 2013 she has been a Life Peer member of the House of Lords .

Life

Suttie was born in the Scottish Borders . She is the daughter of Dr. Alastair Suttie and his wife Gillian Suttie. Her father practiced as a general practitioner and family doctor in Hawick; her mother still lives there today (as of August 2013). Suttie attended Hawick High School from 1980 to 1986. From 1986 to 1990 she studied French and Russian at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh . There she earned a bachelor's degree (BA Hons). In 1988, during her studies, she took part in a three-month exchange program for language students and studied Russian at the Voronezh State University in southern Russia. After completing her studies, she worked as an English teacher in Saint Petersburg from December 1990 to spring 1991 .

From January 2002 to July 2004, she worked as Press Secretary and Policy Advisor to the President of the European Parliament , Pat Cox . From May 2006 to May 2010 she was Head of Office of the Office of the Chairman of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Commons , Nick Clegg . From May to October 2010 was then Deputy Chief of Staff (Deputy Chief of Staff) by Nick Clegg in the office of the Deputy Prime Minister (Office of the Deputy Prime Minister). In 2010 she was campaign manager (Campaign manager) for the Liberal Democrats in the British general election . In 2010 she was also co-ordinator of the coalition negotiation team of the Liberal Democrats in negotiations with the Conservative Party .

Since February 2012 she has been working as a freelance political advisor. Suttie is the owner of her own agency, Suttie Consultancy . In March 2013 she worked as a consultant for civil servants in Chișinău in the Republic of Moldova . She also advised government agencies and officials in Tunisia .

On August 1, 2013, it was announced that Suttie would be named a Life Peer and a member of the House of Lords for the Liberal Democrats. She was appointed as a so-called “working peer”. On September 17, 2013, she was raised to a Life Peer as the Baroness Suttie , of Hawick in the Scottish Borders, and has been a member of the House of Lords ever since. On October 21, 2013, with the assistance of Rosalind Scott, Baroness Scott of Needham Market and Archy Kirkwood, Baron Kirkwood of Kirkhope , it was officially inducted into the House of Lords. She gave her inaugural address shortly after the inaugural address of Alicia Kennedy, Baroness Kennedy of Cradley , also on November 21, 2013 in a debate on human rights .

Her political focus areas include European policy , international development aid , the British government's policy on Scotland, constitutional reform and human rights. Her political interest is geographically particularly the European Union , as well as the countries Moldova, Russia , Bhutan and Nepal .
