Alive ( English for Alive ) is an English-language pop song by Vincent Bueno was sung. He composed it together with David Yang, Felix van Göns and Artur Aigner. With the title he should represent Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

Background and production

On December 12, 2019, ORF announced that Bueno would represent his country at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. He was already involved as a background singer for Nathan Trent in 2017 . He also took part in the 2016 Austrian preliminary decision.

His competition title Alive was presented on March 5, 2020 . He wrote the text alone. He composed the music with Felix van Göns, Artur Aigner and David Yang. He also produced it with the latter. Yang was responsible for recording with Billy Enkhtur, and Nikodem Milewski for mixing and mastering .

Music and lyrics

The title contains influences from funk and rhythm and blues . Bueno describes it as a "mix of ballad and up-tempo number". The song is about the ego. This one should release to be alive ( alive to feel). The instrumentation in the first verse is minimal. During the first pre-chorus, the drum machine slowly emerges and is also applied to the offbeats to increase before the actual chorus begins. The refrain contains the elements of a typical radio song. The instrumentation is also kept in the second stanza. After the second chorus comes the bridge and finally the outro.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Austria should have performed with this song in the second semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.

reception

The reviewing media often drew comparisons with the music of Bruno Mars . Eberhard Forcher describes Alive as a "song that begins as a jazzy ballad and then quickly mutates into a dance pop cracker with a lot of profile". After the experimental contribution Limits from the previous year, they definitely wanted to force action and dynamics. According to Lukas Luger from the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten, the title exudes a “casual, even unpretentious retro charm”. Markus Spiegel says that it starts “incredibly exciting”, but then becomes a “funky, but arbitrary, retro-style song from the eighties”. However, he did not rule out a good placement. Georg Jung-Zsifkovits of the Kleine Zeitung described the contribution as “crap” and as a “terribly meaningless pseudo-R'n'B-filthy pop song [s]”, without, however, wanting to deny Bueno his vocal abilities.

Wiwibloggs criticized the song for being too predictable. However, it is more suitable for the stage than for the studio. According to ESCXtra, the title is a big contrast to last year's contribution. On the other hand, it is not designed to be particularly interesting. The German blog ESC Kompakt writes that Alive is a “nice number that could have addressed an audience similar to Ben Dolic at ESC ”. Furthermore, the song seems "cool and calculated".
