All I want is you
All I Want Is You is the last song on U2's 1988 album Rattle and Hum and was released in 1989 as the fourth single on the album. It is also the closing song of the film Rattle and Hum .
history
In an interview, Bono mentioned that the starting point for All I Want Is You was the coda of the song With or Without You from the previous album The Joshua Tree .
All I Want Is You was released as a single in the UK on June 13, 1989. The reason given by Bono was that the song was mostly ignored in the album reviews. Bono said in relation to this:
“But the songs on it… Desire, Angel of Harlem, All I Want Is You. There's no mention of All I Want Is You in any of the reviews - it's better than With or Without You. We'll probably have to release it as a single before people realize. "
“But the songs on it… Desire, Angel of Harlem, All I Want Is You. All I Want Is You isn't mentioned in any of the reviews - it's better than With or Without You . We'll probably have to release it as a single first for people to notice. "
The B-side contains the cover version of the song Unchained Melody as well as a cover of the song Everlasting Love by The Love Affair . The single reached # 4 in the UK Top 40 and # 2 in Australia. The song reached number 83 on the US Billboard Hot 100 .
In 1994, All I Want Is You appeared on the soundtrack of the film Reality Bites . Through the film, the song regained popularity, which led to a re-release that same year. The song reached number 38 in the US Top 40 mainstream charts .
Musical
The song is in A major, written and consists largely of alternating A-major and D major - chords . The Edge also uses the delay effect , with which an echo-like sound can be achieved for the individual tones.
In All I Want Is You he uses a 425 ms delay that doesn't match the song's tempo, which is 94 bpm . This is unusual because The Edge normally uses a 3/16 delay, which in this case would have been 484 ms. This echo would have been so delayed that it could no longer have been linked to the original note. That's why The Edge chose this slightly shorter delay. The Edge explains the use of the delay effect by saying that it enables an unlimited variety of musical constructions.
In addition, Bono's vocals are provided with a delay effect of 125 ms.
The American musician Van Dyke Parks arranged a string orchestra for the recording of the song .
The music video
The music video was directed by Meiert Avis on April 18, 1989 in Lido di Ostia , near Rome , as a black and white film. Barry Devlin wrote the script for the video, which is a cinematic approach to the song. The U2 band members only appear in brief cameo appearances .
The video tells the story of a dwarf (played by Paolo Risi ) who falls in love with a trapeze artist (played by Paola Rinaldi ). The funeral scene at the end of the video sparked discussions among fans about who had died. In a television interview with The Edge (MTV Europe, MTV's Greatest Hits , November 11, 1991), the U2 guitarist stated that the trapeze artist in the video had died.
In an interview, Bono said of the video:
- Lots of videos try to explain the songs, whereas this is more of a parallel to the song. It's just a story about longing and desire.
In addition, The Edge added:
- You know, lyrical imagery and cinematic imagery often don't have the same effectiveness. So we use the story of Gianni the circus dwarf and Rosa the beautiful trapeze artist as a method to explain the subject of the song through this story. Really, the link is that both are about the unattainable.
The video pays homage to Federico Fellini , who simultaneously shot his last film The Voice of the Moon (La voce della luna) just a few miles from the location of the music video. It also pays homage to Tod Browning's 1932 film Freaks .

Reviews
Rolling Stone : Rattle and Hum calms down to a conclusion with the ballad All I Want Is You , a touching portrayal of unsatisfied desire accompanied by an eloquent string orchestra by Van Dyke Parks.
The Boston Globe : All I Want Is You closes the LP with a gorgeous ending, with Van Dyke Park's string arrangement that takes the song to rock 'n' roll heaven. When the notes fade away, the realization is clear: no rock group has remained so true to its origins on the one hand and has developed so conspicuously as this on the other.

- I've found so many guitar parts from using the echo - it's limitless. The biggest difference between me and other players is that I don't use effects to color my parts. I create guitar parts using effects. They're a crucial element of what I do so I don't consider them a crutch ... They're a part of the art.

- We felt that we either did a really straight forward performance piece… just shot very well, very simple, with an orchestra and literally take it that direction… or else, we do something that's totally different to any video that we've done before. [...] What suddenly struck me is that ... What had never been done is that a band had never commissioned a silent movie for one of their songs. I felt, well, if we would ever gonna have a song that would be possible for it then it is All I Want is You . [...] So, what we are really doing here is that we are creating a short film ... with characters, with a storyline, with a beginning, a middle and an end.
