All My Loving is a German feature film by Edward Berger from 2019, which shows one episode each from the lives of three siblings. It was shown for the first time in February 2019 in the Panorama program of the Berlinale 2019 . The cinema release in Germany was on May 23, 2019.

action

The three siblings Stefan, Julia and Tobias meet in a restaurant to discuss what's coming up in the near future. Julia hardly takes any time because she left her dog alone in the car. Stefan agrees to take the dog in during their upcoming vacation. Tobias complains that it is up to him again to take care of his parents.

Then, in one episode each, the life of each of the siblings is shown in the following weeks:

It will be allright

The pilot Stefan has been on sick leave for months due to hearing and balance problems. His doctor tells him that he is no longer fit to fly. But he pretends to continue working as a pilot. In the evenings, he puts on his uniform to tear up flight attendants for one-night stands in airport hotel bars . Stefan is divorced; his underage daughter lives with him at times. Although he has no custody, he wants to be in control of her, which leads to conflict. He doesn't get along with his sister's dog either. In the end, he confesses to his neighbor, with whom he has a relationship, that he is no longer allowed to fly, but she doesn't care.

Inglaterra, a dream

Julia is on vacation in Italy with her husband Christian. At first everything runs smoothly until they see a street dog being hit. Julia takes him to the hotel to take care of him, where he quickly recovers. Christian is annoyed that everything revolves around the dog, but tries to avoid arguing with his wife about it. At dinner with an old friend, he asks him about her son. Julia says he has been dead for three years, which changes the mood. Julia deals with the dog again and mutual accusations arise. Julia collapses in the hotel because she has not yet come to terms with the death of her child. The next day she lets the dog run again.

Everything he touches

Tobias is 39 years old, but still a student and is currently writing his thesis. But he hardly ever gets to that because he regularly has to look after his three children while his wife is employed and provides for the family income. When she is free, he goes to his parents because the carer who works there has given notice without notice. His father has heart and leg problems but refuses to see a doctor and refuses his son's help. The mother ignores the problems, has the bathroom remade and the food from the Indian. At a party with much younger people, Tobias can briefly hide the problems. The next day the father wants to go to the hospital after all. After examinations are performed, a complication occurs and he must be connected to a ventilator in the intensive care unit. When Tobias visits him, he dies. The mother did not come with us because she did not wake up from taking sleeping pills.

In the final scene, Julia has a child and the whole family comes to the clinic to enjoy the baby.

reception

The film received mostly positive reviews. Björn Becher says in film starts that he tells “despite his episode structure a (!) One-piece story”, which is also due to the “consistent refusal of any kind of overdramatization”. It is a "just as strongly played and outstandingly observational drama about three siblings". Patrick Seyboth from epd Film finds the construction quite daring, but praises the “technically precise design” and “very restrained staging”, so that the event appears “astonishingly coherent”. However, many aspects are only hinted at and too general, which is why it is difficult "to feel with these people and to go along with the action".
