Allen & Overy is a global law firm based in London . The firm advises large corporations, financial institutions and governments and is included in the Magic Circle of UK law firms.

history

Allen & Overy was founded in 1930 by George Allen and Thomas Overy, lawyers with Roney & Co. in London. Early on, the company grew strong in advising Canadian banks and corporations. In 1978 the law firm opened its first office outside the UK. In 2004, four years after opening the New York City office , the company was converted into a Limited Liability Partnership . Since 2008, when the firm opened offices in Riyadh , Abu Dhabi , Mannheim , Düsseldorf and São Paulo , more than 50 percent of sales have been earned outside of London. From 2008 to 2015 there was a branch in Mannheim, whose lawyers then worked at the Frankfurt office.

The firm now has 44 offices in 31 countries in Europe, America, Asia and Australia.

In Germany, the firm is represented by over 220 lawyers and tax advisors in Düsseldorf , Frankfurt am Main , Hamburg and Munich .

Mandates (selection)

The law firm advised, among other things, in the case of the abdicating Edward VIII. It advised Deutsche Bahn on the first hostile takeover in the City of London , Deutsche Bahn against GdL strikes, and Bank SG Warburg & Co. on the issue of the first Eurobonds by the Italian Autostrada .

Guantanamo prisoners

In 2004, Pamela Chepiga and five other lawyers from the firm represented fifteen Yemeni US prisoners interned at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base and sent an amicus curiae letter in the Rasul v. Bush to the United States Supreme Court . Charles Stimson , the then "Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Detainee Affairs", criticized this with the words: "Boards of directors of commercial companies should ask law firms to choose between lucrative mandates and the representation of terrorists." As a result of severe criticism of this statement, also on the part of the Department of Defense, Stimson resigned.
