All or Nothing was an ARD quiz show that was broadcast from 1958 to 1988.

history

The TV quiz was broadcast for the first time in 1956 in the evening program of German television (only in the area of Bavarian radio), and from 1958 on in the ARD main evening program.

Course of the game

Several candidates appeared one after the other in each program in order to be questioned by the quiz master on a "specialty" of their choice - each playing for themselves . This topic could come from any field of knowledge. In each broadcast, as many areas were discussed as there were candidates (usually 3, less often 2 or 4). Sometimes it was about well-known topics such as Mozart or Schiller , sports (soccer, Olympic Games), sometimes about areas less familiar to the general public such as special types of insects and gemstones. To this extent, each broadcast constituted a mix of topics.

The game was played for a maximum of DM 8,000 in several rounds. In the first round, the candidate won 50 DM and only had to answer one or two easy questions from his “specialty”. If the round was successfully completed, he was allowed to decide whether he was satisfied with this amount or wanted to go one round in the next broadcast. The next steps were DM 125, DM 250, DM 500, DM 1000, DM 2000, DM 4000 and finally DM 8000. In each round the candidate had to answer more and more complex questions in order to advance.

In the final round for DM 8,000, the candidate was placed in a soundproof booth since the 1970s, had to answer over 30 questions about his area and thus filled almost the entire broadcasting time; in addition to a DM 8,000 candidate, there was always room for only one newcomer. However, many candidates did not make it that far and voluntarily dropped out beforehand. It rarely happened that a candidate failed a round due to insufficient knowledge.

Until the introduction of color television in Germany (August 1967), “Alles or nothing” was broadcast as a recording, then switched to color and broadcast “live” .

reception

The show is based on the US format The $ 64,000 Question , which the broadcaster CBS started in 1955. As a result of the effects of the quiz show scandal , the format was canceled in the USA , and the program managers and the moderator were dismissed. In 1976 there was a new edition.

At the time it was broadcast, the quiz had high ratings in Germany and was very popular. In the TV generation 2005, in which Günther Jauch can win up to one million euros in the multiple-choice procedure, the expense and income of some viewers who were asked about a reminiscence program are disproportionate and the Examination style was perceived as dry.

successor

A kind of remake of the show All or nothing was there with the quiz show Risk! Produced by ZDF from 1998 to 2002 . which was based on the same show concept.

The title of the RTL show hosted by Hugo Egon Balder and Hella von Sinnen , Everything nothing or ?! alludes to the title of the program, but has nothing in common in terms of content.
