The Allocasuarina are a plant genus in the family of casuarinaceae (Casuarinaceae) from the order of the book-like (Fagales).
The Allocasuarina - species are endemic in Australia before - mainly in the (dry) south of the continent (where they as Sheoaks or Sheoaks be called).
description
All species are evergreen woody trees and bushes up to 20 meters high. The ribbed and long, thin, segmented and wiry, rod-like branches have taken over the function of the leaves and are called phyllocladium . At the tip of the individual segments, the leaves, which are reduced to teeth and consist only of the lamina, sit whorled. The segments are smaller at the bottom and then get bigger.
The male flowers sit in a tooth-shaped bract and usually two scale-shaped bracts in short to elongated spikes . They consist of an early sloping scaly perianth and a stamen . The female flowers form spherical or egg-shaped inflorescences. They sit at a tooth-shaped bract and are without perianth, they are wrapped in two scale-like bracts, the ovary with two rarely or four ovules has a bifurcated and reddish pen .
Characteristic are the partially prickly, cone- like, wooden fruit clusters, which contain many, sometimes hairy and seed-like wingnuts (samara). They sit in the woody "capsules" which are formed by two prophylls and then open in the shape of lips (flaps, valves).
Systematics
The genus Allocasuarina was separated from the genus of the casuarina ( Casuarina ) by LASJohnson in 1980 .
