Almere (inland lake)
The inland lake Almere was located in the area in which the IJsselmeer is located in the Netherlands today.
Surname
The name of the inland lake is traced back to Bonifatius . This drove in 753 over the Aelmere , whereby the first syllable Ael can probably be traced back to the eel . At that time the Almere was probably fresh water - or a brackish water lake .
Origin and End
By Pomponius Mela , a Roman geographer , was in his work De Choreographia the water in 44 n. Chr. Still Lacus Flevo called. The name Flevum can also be found in other sources . The Flevomeer developed into the Almere over time .
A number of factors were decisive in creating the salty Zuiderzee from the Almere in the Middle Ages :
- the rise in sea levels as a result of the medieval warm period
- the peat by the Friesen in Westfriesland ( Enkhuizen , Medemblik , etc.), whereby the Vlie , a connection between the Almere and the mud flats was
- Floods such as B. the Julian flood in 1164 and the All Saints flood in 1170.

The name of the municipality Almere is derived from this inland lake.
