Almost a Dance is the second studio album by the Dutch band The Gathering . It was published by Foundation 2000 in 1993.

Creation and publication

After the debut album Always… The Gathering performed in Belgium and Israel. However, since the collaboration with the singers Bart Smits and Marike Groot did not work, both had to leave the band. They were replaced by Niels Duffhues and Martine van Loon. With this line-up, a second album was recorded in September 1993, which was released in the same year. Soon after the release, Duffhues and van Loon left the band and Anneke van Giersbergen became the new singer in 1994 .

style

Almost a Dance moves away from the Death Doom of the debut album and adapts stylistically to the new singer Niels Duffhues. He sings with a clear voice and "reminds me more of Mike Patton than of his growling predecessor" Bart Smits. As a result, the Death and Doom Metal influences largely disappear. Many compositions are orchestrated by dominant keyboards. The atmosphere is mostly gloomy, the pieces seem more solemn and relaxed than on the debut.

reception

The reactions to the album were mixed and often focused on the new singer and the changed style. UMUR from Progarchives.com considers Duffhues' vocals to be "weak and monotonous", while Martin Groß from Metal Hammer thinks that he "makes this record worth discovering and gives the overall picture its own note". Frank Albrecht from Rock Hard criticizes the fact that the band's style is "now a very shallow, keyboard-backed hard rock". Ernis from metalstorm.net thinks the album is too immature and considers some pieces to be mere fillers. In Metal Hammer , however, it is judged that Almost a Dance is a "[successful] attempt to reconcile convention with art".
