Creation and publication

After two demo recordings , The Gathering signed a record deal with Foundation 2000. Recordings for the debut album took place from late February to early March 1992. Henk van Koeverden was involved as a guest musician (keyboard). After the release of Always… the band performed in Belgium and Israel. However, since the collaboration with the singers Bart Smits and Marike Groot did not work, both had to leave the band. They were eventually replaced by Niels Duffhues and Martine van Loon.

The keyboard plays an important role in the instrumentation. Bart Smits sings gutturally . Comparisons have been made in the press between Paradise Lost and Tiamat .

reception

The reactions to the album were mostly positive. Ernis from metalstorm.net describes Always… as a “good Doom Death album”, but rates the later releases with Anneke van Giersbergen higher. Robert Müller finds the pieces “not always so convincingly structured” and considers the album as a whole to be “[z] a bit strange, but certainly also quite original.” Frank Albrecht from Rock Hard praises the “slightly depressive-somber compositions "And thinks the album is" [e] simply eerie-beautiful ".
