Almut von Gladiß (born May 29, 1943 - † June 24, 2013 ) was a German art historian and long-time curator at the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin .

Life

Almut von Gladiß studied with Ludwig Budde at the Universities of Münster and Cologne , among others, classical archeology in the main subject and art history , ancient and medieval history as well as prehistory and early history in the minor subjects. In 1970 she did her doctorate with Heinz Kähler on the Arc du Rhône of Arles . Soon after, however, she developed an interest in Islamic art history, which was little pursued in Germany at that time, and worked at the German Archaeological Institute in Istanbul from 1972 and 1974 , but also traveled to the Arab Mediterranean countries, Iran and Afghanistan and worked on ancient South Arabian sculptures . For 1974/1975 she received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute .

Since the summer of 1976 she has been an assistant at the Museum for Islamic Art in Berlin-Dahlem , where she worked as a research assistant between 1987 and 2008. For a long time, one focus of her research was medieval Islamic metal art , but she also worked on Spanish-Islamic and Indian art and published, for example, with François Déroche a contribution on the magnificent Iranian Korans . Under the direction of Klaus Brisch , she worked on, among other things, the museum's loose-leaf collection, which was supposed to make accessible objects from the collection that had not been published and were not permanently on display.

After reunification, she gained access to the collection of Friedrich Sarre and the Mughal albums owned by the Pergamon Museum . She published the result of her research on these objects in 2010 under the title Album Sheets: Miniatures from the Collections of Indo-Islamic Rulers . In 2008, together with Claus-Peter Haase, she designed an exhibition of exhibits from the Museum of Islamic Art in the United Arab Emirates. Her last work was a volume on the metalwork in the collection of the Museum of Islamic Art, with which she could return to the beginning of her research on Islamic art and finally present the results of her work.
