description

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe descoingsii grows stemless or with very short stems, sprouts abundantly and forms dense groups. The approximately eight to ten ovate, long, pointed leaves form dense rosettes . Their cloudy green leaf blades are up to 3 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. There are many cloudy white warts on the rough surface. The cartilaginous, white teeth on the leaf margin are 1 millimeter long and 1 to 1.5 millimeters apart. Towards the tip of the leaf, the marginal teeth become smaller and are ultimately missing entirely.

Inflorescences and flowers

The simple inflorescence reaches a length of 12 to 15 centimeters. The heady grapes are up to 12 to 25 centimeters long. They consist of about ten flowers . The egg-shaped-pointed bracts have a length of 2 millimeters and are 1 millimeter wide. The scarlet flowers become lighter towards the mouth and can be slightly orange there. They stand on 5 millimeter long flower stalks . The urn-shaped flowers are 7 to 8 millimeters long and flat and narrow at their base. At the level of the ovary they have a diameter of 4 millimeters. Towards the mouth they are narrowed to 3 millimeters. Your outer tepals are not fused together over a length of 2 millimeters. The stamens and the stylus do not protrude from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe descoingsii is common in Madagascar . Aloe descoingsii subsp. descoingsii grows there on flat ground on limestone cliffs at altitudes of about 350 meters. Aloe descoingsii subsp. augustina is widespread on limestone in the shade of bushes at altitudes of about 100 meters.

The first description by Gilbert Westacott Reynolds was published in 1958. A synonym is Guillauminia descoingsii (Reynolds) PVHeath (1994).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Aloe descoingsii subsp. descoingsii
  • Aloe descoingsii subsp. Augustina Lavranos

Aloe descoingsii subsp. augustina
In contrast to Aloe descoingsii subsp. descoingsii , the leaves are narrower and greyish green. There are many white warts on the leaf surface, each of which has a bristle-like spike, especially on the keel of the underside near the tip. The flowers are almost cylindrical and have a wide mouth.

The subspecies was first described in 1995 by John Jacob Lavranos .

Danger

Aloe descoingsii is listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species .
