Alois Neuhold (2012)

Alois Neuhold (born April 19, 1951 in Eggersdorf near Graz ) is a contemporary painter and object artist . He signs his works with Neuvalis.

Life and meaning

Alois Neuhold first studied Catholic theology in Graz from 1970 to 1976 and then worked as a priest in Göss (Leoben parish) . In 1978 he began studying graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna , which he graduated in 1982. In 1979 he was suspended from the priesthood. In 1986 he was awarded the art promotion prize of the city of Graz, one year later he published as Manifesto I “Adwänd, Adwänd, the hind is burning” and in 2011/2012 as Manifesto II “Far behind the world's back doors: image pits against the rapid - against Dilution of time and megalomania - bodyward paths - earthward images - fools' caps for the sacred ”. Both manifestos can be seen as comments on his artistic work.

Due to its independence, Neuhold's comprehensive work can only be assigned to a school or direction with difficulty. After completing his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, he found connection to the "New Painting" and participated in major exhibitions, so that his work was also assigned to this direction in the following years. Neuhold's work moves in different areas: painting on various image carriers, prints especially in the early 80s, drawings and ink works, relief images since 1983 and finally plastic images and interventions in public space. For long stretches of his oeuvre it is characteristic of Neuhold that he combines painting and sculptural work.

Neuhold describes his artistic work as “compression in the smallest of spaces”, “bundling of energy”, “color compression”, and as the “incarnation of light”.

It is worth mentioning the title, which both explains and puzzles his works in a poetic way.

Alois Neuhold lives and works in Sankt Georgen an der Stiefing , Styria .

Image portal with image chapel to the image descent world. Installation in the cultural center at the Minoriten, steirischer herbst, Graz, 2012

“Yes, they have to be kneaded like bread, the picture bodies, the loaf pictures. Yes, they must become bodies, living wheels, real bodies, faun lambs with veins and soul costume ... "

“He chose the small and the smallest, the most neglected. In small things are all miracles, all greatness is contained. The big man addict has ravaged our world, gummed up our eyes, exhausted the earth and blocked the sky, the vastness ... "

“I don't fit in any drawers, in any art or denomination boxes. In front of the secret chambers and mystery shrines of life all the shops and boxes burst. I'm sitting at the bottom. Next to me the core cathedrals of the incomprehensible ... "

“The creation of my image is a cultic act ... I question the chests of the traditionally sacred ... I see the sacred in all things. I build chapels and shrines for them. My pictures are holy shrines. "

"Proceed as branching in the picture as plants do, cell by cell, branch by branch ... The picture of a living being that really lives ..."
