Alois Stöger (Bishop)

Alois Stöger (born April 12, 1904 in Kautzen in Lower Austria; † December 12, 1999 in Hainstetten ) was an Austrian clergyman, auxiliary bishop in St. Pölten and biblical scholar .

Live and act

Alois Stöger graduated from the Stiftsgymnasium Seitenstetten in 1925 and then studied at the Philosophical-Theological University in St. Pölten. He was ordained a priest in 1930 and was then chaplain in Groß Gerungs for two years . From 1932 to 1935 he studied philosophy and biblical studies in Rome and was then cathedral curate in St. Pölten until 1938 , spiritual of the seminary from 1938 to 1959 and cathedral chapter from 1959 . In 1939 he was awarded a doctorate in theology in Vienna and from 1942 to 1961 he taught New Testament biblical studies at the Philosophical-Theological University in St. Pölten. From 1961 to 1967 he was rector of the Collegio Teutonico di Santa Maria dell'Anima in Rome.

On July 3, 1967 Stöger was from Pope Paul VI. appointed auxiliary bishop of the diocese of St. Pölten and titular bishop of Aptuca . He was ordained bishop on August 15 of the same year by the bishop of St. Pölten, Franz Žak . Co -consecrators were Bishop Rudolf Graber from Regensburg and Auxiliary Bishop Jakob Weinbacher from Vienna .

Due to age, he resigned from his office as auxiliary bishop in 1986.
