Alois Stettner

Life

Alois Stettner was the youngest of 14 children of a paper mill owner ; the mother died when he was barely three years old. Even during his primary school days in Mudersbach and later as a high school student, he portrayed relatives and friends in pencil or chalk and painted landscapes in watercolor and oil.

After finishing high school in Prüm, having passed the Abitur in 1932 in Wippefführung, he studied from 1933 to 1939 at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf with Werner Heuser , August Hoff and Wilhelm Schmurr . Here he graduated as a master class student. From 1940 he took part in the Second World War as a soldier . He was employed as a draftsman for a propaganda company.

The Polish soldiers and intellectuals found murdered in the Katyn forest in April 1943 were documented by him in drawings and photographs on the instructions of his superiors. He was able to secure them and are present in the estate. This terrible experience accompanied him for many years on his further life.

In 1945 he returned from a Soviet captivity and initially worked as a freelance artist in his hometown. From 1950 he worked mainly in Koblenz , where he lived in the artists' colony on the Asterstein until 1956. Stettner's artistic work was influenced by Russian icon art . In 1956, Stettner taught at the University of Fine Arts (Werkkunstschule) in Darmstadt in the field of glass painting .

Window in the baptistery of the former Maria Hilf parish in Koblenz-Lützel

The entire stained glass window design of the Sankt Kastor basilica , the choir glazing of the Herz-Jesu-Kirche, the windows of the baptistery Maria-Hilf-Kirche and a granite plaque on the outer wall of the parish church of Sankt Elisabeth come from him, all in Koblenz.

This was followed by orders for the design of the west window in the Liebfrauenkirche in Trier, the west window in Mainz Cathedral, the window in the side aisle of the parish church St. Markus in Wittlich , partial glazing by Sankt Gertrudis in Essen, partial glazing of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Peterswald-Hunsrück, choir window in Sankt Maria Himmelfahrt in Wiehl-Sieg. In the competition for the Cologne Cathedral in 1950, the city of Cologne donated the north window in the transept on the occasion of the cathedral anniversary. 73 artists took part in the competition. Alois Stettner was one of the five winners. The order did not materialize, and it was not until April 28, 1980 that the partially preserved figuration was handed over to the mayor of Cologne.

In his home area he created the windows for the Assumption of Mary in Mudersbach, partial glazing for the parish church of St. Mauritius and companions in Niederfischbach, the parish church of St. Michael in Kirchen, the subsidiary churches of St. Peter and Paul in Alsdorf and St. Josef in Dermbach. Other sacred works, mentioned in the estate, are in Bendorf, Bensberg, Bernkastel-Kues, Brohl, Wittlich, Bendorf, Etscheid, Worms-Hochheim, Haan, Leverkusen, Marienthal near Hamm ad Sieg, Merzig, Minden, Moselkern, Neustadt-Wied , Preischeid-Eifel, Saarburg and Trier Sankt Antonius.

Special mention is made of the profane windows for the Rheinisch-Westfälische Bank, formerly Deutsche Bank in Siegen and in the former administration building of Hüttenwerke Siegerland in Geisweid-Westphalia. Both glazings were preserved thanks to private and museum initiatives: Windows from the Rheinisch-Westfälische Bank in the “Bürgerhaus Birken-Sieg”, windows from the iron and steel works in the “Museum Oberes Schloss” in Siegen, installed in the industrial history area. Further work for secular buildings: Andernach elementary school, Betzdorf-Sieg Hotel Deutsches Haus.

The art glass companies Derix in Kevelaer, Kaschenbach and Binsfeld in Trier, HW Eichhorn in Boppard, and H. Römer in Solingen were preferred companies to carry out his designs.

Among other things, he used the workshops of the Trier art glazier Peter Kaschenbach to produce his glass works. Alois Stettner has a memorial in the Mudersbach cemetery. In addition, Alois-Stettner-Strasse in Mudersbach is named after him.
