Aloys Obrist

Aloys Obrist , also Alois Obrist (born March 30, 1867 in San Remo , Italy; † June 29, 1910 in Stuttgart ) was a German musicologist , bandmaster and conductor.

Life

Obrist studied music in Weimar and Berlin, and received his doctorate in musicology in Berlin in 1892. He then received a call as Kapellmeister at the Stadttheater Augsburg. From September 1895 to 1900 he was royal Württemberg court conductor at the Stuttgart State Theater , where he made great contributions to the modernization of the repertoire of the subscription concerts of the court orchestra, and from 1901 to 1907 he was curator of the Liszt Museum in Weimar. His collection of musical instruments, including a Kielflügel by Johann Gottfried Silbermann , went to the Bachhaus Eisenach after his death .

He was married to Hildegard Jenicke . His brother Hermann Obrist was a well-known sculptor.

His affair with the opera singer Anna Sutter turned out to be fatal. After Anna Sutter had ended the relationship after two years in 1909, Obrist broke into her apartment on June 29, 1910 and - after his love was again rejected - shot her with two pistol shots before killing himself with five shots.
