Alphonse Bilung SVD (born June 5, 1933 in Kusumdegi ) is former bishop of Rourkela .
Life
Alphonse Bilung joined the religious order of Steyler Missionaries and was ordained a priest on October 3, 1961 .
Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Rourkela on July 4, 1979 . The Archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar , Henry Sebastian D'Souza , consecrated him bishop on November 3 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Raphael Cheenath SVD, Bishop of Sambalpur , and Hermann Westermann SVD, Bishop Emeritus of Sambalpur . During his tenure, Bilung actively campaigned against the Indian caste system , which he also sees as the cause of attacks on Catholic missionaries.
On April 2, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation.
