Alphonse Rolland (born September 14, 1919 in Forbach , † February 26, 2012 in Strasbourg ) was a French football player who began his professional career in 1938 and was a regular goal scorer, especially in the post-war years.

Career

The striker Rolland began playing football at US Forbach in his hometown before moving to the neighboring club CS Stiring-Wendel . In the lower class playing club, he revealed his talent, so that the first division team Racing Strasbourg from the capital of Alsace noticed him and signed him in the run-up to the 1938/39 season. The move to the nationwide French league meant that the then almost 19-year-old entered professional football . The junior player was often considered at this level in his first season and had a total of 19 games with five hits. With the beginning of the Second World War in September 1939, regular league operations were discontinued for an indefinite period and replaced by unofficially held championships. Like many of his previous teammates, however, Rolland was drafted into the military.

Since he was unable to return to his home region Alsace-Lorraine, which was occupied by Germany, Rolland came to southwest France as a war refugee at the beginning of the 1940s and joined the Girondins ASP Bordeaux football club in the 1941/42 season . With this he took part in the unofficial championship event in the following time. As the cup winner of the zone occupied by Germany, Bordeaux made it to the French Cup final in 1943 , where they met Olympique Marseille . In each case with Rolland's participation, a 2: 2 was fought first, the due replay ended with a 0: 4 defeat. For the duration of the 1943/44 season, in which only so-called Équipes fédérales were allowed in place of club teams , he belonged to the ÉF Bordeaux-Guyenne . He spent the last war season in 1944/45 again with Girondins.

At the end of the war he returned to Strasbourg, which was again part of France, and was re-accepted into the Racing team. There he took a permanent place and after eight goals in the first post-war year with 15 goals during the season 1946/47 ensured that his team finished third in the table with four points behind the champions CO Roubaix-Tourcoing . In addition, he successfully qualified for the national cup final in 1947 , in which he missed winning this competition by beating Olympique Lille 2-0, as in 1943. In the following year he was able to increase his personal hit count again and achieved his personal best with 17 goals.

In the summer of 1948 he left Strasbourg, where those responsible no longer counted on him, and signed with league rivals OGC Nice . In this he was also regularly taken into account and scored a total of 19 hits in two years. After he had started his career in 1938 exclusively first class and had achieved good placements there with his teams in previous years, he decided in 1950 with his signature at Olympique Lyon to go into the second class for the first time. However, Lyon was a top team at this level and Rolland contributed with 13 goals that his team succeeded in advancing to the top division with a clear margin. Subsequently, he remained an integral part of the team, but appeared only once as a goalscorer in 1951/52 and also had to accept the descent of Lyons. The then 32-year-old then ended his professional career. Overall, without the unofficial years of his career during the war, he had 197 first division games with 65 hits and 30 second division games with 13 goals. He then let his playing career end with the lower class USB Longwy . From 1957 to 1962 he coached the SAS Épinal and reached with this 1958 promotion to the highest amateur league CFA, which was followed by relegation in 1961. Rolland died in Strasbourg in 2012 at the age of 92.
