history
Since 1872 cattle herders lived in the area of today's Alpine, who lived in tents near the herds. In spring 1882, as part of the construction of the railway, a tent city for the construction workers, which was called Osborn, was built. Since the railway company needed the water rights to build a train station, an agreement was reached with the owners of the rights, Daniel and Thomas Murphy, to name the new location after them. The city's foundation stone was laid in 1883 as Murphyville , which was renamed Alpine in February 1888 at the request of the residents. In 1888 there were about a dozen houses, three saloons and a hotel.
Alpine grew slowly until 1921. In 1921, Sul Ross State Normal College , the forerunner of Sul Ross State University , was founded and the first paved roads were laid to provide traffic in the surrounding area. In the following years, Alpine quickly developed into the center of the Big Bend area. The population rose from 396 in 1904 to 931 in 1920 to around 3,000 in 1927. At the beginning of the 1940s, the Big Bend National Park was opened and the park region was subordinated to the city.
