At the 1st Alpine World Ski Championships in Mürren in Switzerland in 1931 , a downhill skiing competition for women was held. This took place on February 20, 1931 on the Winteregg route. The 17-year-old Esmé MacKinnon from Great Britain crowned herself the first world champion in downhill skiing .

Date: Friday February 20, 1931

Route: Winteregg route ; Elevation difference 430 m. The length of the race had to be shortened to 2000 meters due to 40 cm of fresh snow and a heavy snow storm.

Participants: 19 started; 17 rated;

Six runners were allowed to compete for each nation, but only Switzerland and Great Britain made use of this.

The Austrian Emma Ripper fell by a margin and suffered a small foot injury, but was able to finish the race in eleventh place.

The Swiss Josie de Latour was disqualified for stick riding (prohibited stick use). The Norwegian participant, Ms. Østbye, is said to have been injured in a fall and did not take part in the other competitions.
