At the 1st Alpine World Ski Championships in Mürren in Switzerland in 1931 , a downhill race for men was held. This took place on February 20, 1931 on the Winteregg route. For world champion in downhill skiing is crowned Walter Prager from Switzerland.

Route: Winteregg route ; Elevation difference 430 m. The length of the race had to be shortened to 2000 meters due to a heavy snow storm.

Participants: 26 started; 25 rated;

A duel between the Alpine countries Austria and Switzerland for the first places was expected from the start. The English , who had been training on Mürren's descents for several weeks, were granted outsider opportunities.

Six starters were allowed per nation. The Austrian sextet was selected by the chairman of the committee for sport in the ÖSV , Dr. Martin selected. A total of ten athletes were taken to Mürren, two from the Salzburg Ski Association, the rest from the Tyrolean Ski Association. Christian Blattl from Saalfelden , who had won the international university skiing competitions in Mürren two years earlier, as well as Rudolph Matt and Jacob Lackner were not considered for the race .

The Swiss Hans Schlunegger had to give up the race because of a broken ski.
