biography

At the beginning of the 1930s, Fritz Steuri, who competed for the Kleine Scheidegg ski club , was one of the most successful Swiss ski racers. At the Alpine World Ski Championships , which were held for the first time in 1931 and were not officially called World Championships at that time, but were referred to as FIS races or FIS competitions, he won one silver and two bronze medals by 1933: At the first FIS races In 1931 in Mürren he came third in the downhill, behind his compatriots Walter Prager and Otto Furrer . He did not take part in the slalom. In 1932 he stayed in Cortina d'Ampezzo without a medal and achieved fifth place in the slalom and seventh place in the downhill and in the combination. In 1933 in Innsbruck he won the bronze medal in the slalom behind the two Austrians Anton Seelos and Gustav Lantschner and, with fourth place in the downhill, the silver medal in the combination behind Seelos.

At the Lauberhorn races in Wengen , which have been held since 1930, Fritz Steuri won the downhill and combined races twice in a row in 1931 and 1932. At the “Great Ski Races in Switzerland”, the Swiss Ski Championships, in Zermatt in 1932 he took third place in the senior I class downhill. In 1933 in Einsiedeln , he won the downhill run with the fastest time of day in this class, which gave him the challenge prize as a special prize of the British Ski Club. With a second place in the slalom, he also won the alpine combination of downhill and slalom in the senior class. In 1942 he won the 36th Swiss ski race in Grindelwald in age group I in downhill and slalom. From 1935 Steuri was the first director of the newly founded Kleine Scheidegg ski school.

In addition to his work as a ski racer and ski school director, Fritz Steuri was also a well-known mountain guide. He had already received his driving license in 1926. On August 9, 1955, he and a German couple were supposed to climb the 4,044 meter high Gross Grünhorn over the Grünegghorn . After crossing the 3860 meter high Grünegghorn, the group was hit by a slab in a depression between Grünegghorn and Gross Grünhorn and killed. Steuri left behind his wife and four children. His son Walter Steuri, ten years old when his father died, was chairman of the Jungfrau Railways management from 1994 to 2008 .
