Otto Lantschner (born August 14, 1908 in Innsbruck ; † September 1, 1989 there ) was an Austro-German ski racer . He won numerous international races in the late 1920s and 1930s.

Life

Like his siblings Inge , Hadwig , Gustav and Gerhard, Otto Lantschner comes from the famous Lantschner ski family and belonged to the Innsbruck skiers' association. After graduation he studied Jus at the University of Innsbruck . The 19-year-old celebrated his first major successes at the Academic World Championships in 1928 with victories in downhill and combined as well as fourth place in slalom. In 1930 his best results were the second places in the downhill at the Academic World Championships in Davos and at the first kilometer Lancé race in St. Moritz , both times only beaten by his brother Gustav.

In the winter of 1931 Lantschner won the downhill run from Innsbruck and became academic world champion downhill for the second time. At the first World Ski Championships in Mürren , Switzerland , he finished sixth downhill. The next winter he missed the World Championship in Cortina d'Ampezzo and only celebrated his only victories at the end of the season in the downhill, slalom and the combination of Chamonix . Due to injury, he could not take part in the 1933 World Cup in his hometown and only celebrated two victories again at the end of the season in the downhill and the combination of St. Anton . In 1934 he still won the downhill, the slalom and the combined on the Brückenberg before he retired from skiing for some time. In the winter of 1936 he returned to the slopes and, now starting for Germany, celebrated his last two victories in the slalom and the Davos combination.

Lantschner's second passion was film. As early as 1930 and 1931 he worked in Arnold Fanck's films Storms over Mont Blanc and The White Rush . Also in 1931 he was an actor in the film Osterskitour in Tirol , which was produced by his brother Gustav. In 1934 he was a production assistant in the Nazi propaganda film Triumph des Willens von Leni Riefenstahl , for which he also worked for many years as a cameraman, including her Olympic films . Lantschner therefore moved to Berlin , where he also met his future wife.
