Altamas Kabir

Altamas Kabir ( Bengali আলতামাস কবির Ālatāmās Kabir ; born July 19, 1948 in Calcutta , † February 19, 2017 in Calcutta) was an Indian lawyer . From 2012 to 2013 he was Chief Justice of India ( Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India ).

childhood and education

Altamas Kabir was born into a Muslim Bengali family who preferred to stay in the Indian part when India was partitioned . His father, Jehangir Kabir, was a senior politician and trade union leader in West Bengal . Altamas Kabir received schooling at the Calcutta Boys' School, among others, a respected educational institution that was founded during the British colonial era. One of his teachers was impressed with his ability to give free speech and recommended that he pursue a legal career. First, however, Altamas Kabir graduated with a degree in history from Presidency College in Calcutta, before moving to the University of Calcutta Studied law.

Career

After completing his MA and LLB at the University of Calcutta in 1973 , he was admitted to the bar and practiced in civil and criminal law in Calcutta.

On August 6, 1990, he was appointed judge at the Calcutta High Court , where he was responsible, among other things, for the computerization of the city's courts. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of India on September 9, 2005, where he finally succeeded Sarosh Homi Kapadia as the 39th Chief Justice of India on September 29, 2012 . After a term of only about nine months, he retired on July 18, 2013 due to reaching the age limit. His calling was therefore the end of a long career and not the long-term occupation of the position, as was the case with his successor P. Sathasivam .

Judgments

During his tenure as a judge at the Supreme Court of India, several significant judgments were made under his leadership, particularly on human rights and electoral law issues. Altamas Kabir was a staunch advocate of civil rights. In 2011 the Supreme Court of India ruled that female relatives of the husband could also fall under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 .

On October 19, 2012, he released on bail the journalist Syed Mohammed Ahmed Kazmi, who was arrested for alleged involvement in an attack on a vehicle belonging to the Israeli embassy and then allegedly treated unfairly by the police.
