Architecture and history

The history of pharmacies in Sudenburg goes back to May 1792, when the Mecklenburg pharmacist Christoph Ludwig Heyden applied to the Magdeburg Chamber for approval for a pharmacy in Sudenburg, which at that time was still located immediately south of Magdeburg's old town . but could not prevail. In September 1792 the application was denied. An initiative launched by Sudenburg citizens' representatives to the Prussian king was refused by the latter. A new application was made as early as 1794, which, however, was also unsuccessful after protests by the five existing Magdeburg pharmacies. On February 3, 1830, the pharmacist Carl August Christian Allardt applied to the secret Minister of State Wilhelm Anton von Klewiz for permission to set up a pharmacy in Sudenburg, which was actually granted to him on March 6, 1830. The opening took place on September 18, 1831 at the Sudenburg address Breiter Weg 58 , today's Halberstädter Strasse 141 . After seven years the pharmacy was sold to Jacob Danckwortt . On October 1, 1867, he handed the pharmacy over to his son Hermann Danckwortt , who ran it until October 1, 1906.

The core of the one to two-storey plastered pharmacy building in its western, single-storey part, covered with a gable roof , probably dates back to the beginning of the 19th century and is thus one of the first developments in the then newly built Sudenburg. The adjacent Friedensstrasse was built around 1870, putting the house in a corner position. In 1887 the pharmacist Dankwortt had the eastern, gable part rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style. The part of the building previously located there was demolished for this purpose. At the same time, the eaves west wing was rebuilt accordingly. In the gable area of the new building, groups of lancet windows were arranged, which are reminiscent of church windows or the design of late Gothic town houses. The gable is crowned by a finial . Also noteworthy is a small tower-like corner projection attached to the corner of Friedensstrasse.

A pharmacy with a wood-paneled ceiling was set up on the ground floor of the new building. A laboratory with a room for materials and a mortar was also built. Living rooms were housed above the pharmacy.

The words of thanks were followed by seven other senior pharmacists. From October 1916 to April 1918 a woman worked as a pharmacy assistant in the old pharmacy in Magdeburg for the first time. In 1921, the pharmacy employed a pharmacist, two assistants, two apprentices and two assistants. From April 1, 1938 to March 31, 1942, the Alte Apotheke functioned as a teaching pharmacy . During this time the authorization for the training of pharmacist interns existed, which during the time of National Socialism no longer existed in general for all pharmacies and changed between the different pharmacies.

After the Second World War , there were fundamental changes in the pharmacy system in East Germany. The Alte Apotheke came into the possession of the Prussian province of Saxony by law on October 1, 1945 . In 1949 the pharmacy was taken over by Heinz Müller . Müller gained fame through the toad test he used . He injected the urine of women into toads that he kept behind the house. Based on the reaction of the toads, Müller concluded that there might be pregnancies . In 1954, Müller was one of the initiators of the establishment of the Pharmaceutical Society of the Magdeburg District . The pharmacy was leased from 1950 to 1962. When Müller resigned as a tenant in 1962, it became state property on January 1, 1963. In 1975, renovations were carried out to improve and modernize the working conditions in the pharmacy. In 1981 the pharmacist Siegfried Nadolny laid out a herb garden with around 60 medicinal plants on the farm. In the early 2000s, the Alte Apotheke was operated as a branch of the pharmacy in the Kaufland shopping center . The history of its use as a pharmacy ended around the 2010s. Currently (as of 2017) there is a café in the house.

In the local register of monuments , the residential and commercial building is listed under registration number 094 81988 as a monument .

As part of the Wilhelminian style building ensemble in the area around Ambrosiusplatz, the building is considered significant in terms of urban development.
