Old Castle (Bavaria)
Old castle

The old castle , also known as the old castle , is the ruin of a moated castle in Markt Burgsinn in the Lower Franconian district of Main-Spessart in Bavaria .

Geographical location

The old castle is located a little northeast of the town center of Burgsinn, through which the aura flows, whereby the aura flows around 240 meters south-south-east of the moated castle near the (outdoor) swimming pool into the flood ditch, a branch of the river about 200 meters east of the castle complex in north-south Direction flowing sense .

history

The moated castle was owned by the barons of Thüngen , in 1001 knight Hildolf von Tüngen exchanged the "village of Sinna with all its affiliations" with the Würzburg monastery for his imperial fief in Thuringia .

It was not until 1303 that Gozo, Aplo and Hermannus de Sinna had their residence at the castle, in 1317 it was a fiefdom of the Rienecker Counts , and in 1337 it was given by the Bishop of Würzburg with all possessions as a castle loan to Dietz von Tungden, the castle that stands today from 1339 to 1342 essentially built it and sold the entire property to his son Wilhelm von Thüngen in 1405 .

The free castle Burgsinn was later assigned as a fiefdom by Balthasar and Sigmund von Thüngen Brandenburg and has since been owned by the Andreas line of the Thüngen family. Gottfried von Thüngen, the current owner, lives in France, so the castle is no longer inhabited.

description

The wide moat surrounding the castle is fed by an underground spring. On the west side, a bridge leads into the castle with a trapezoidal floor plan, the corners of which are formed by towers. The circular wall consists of red sandstone - humpback ashlars , the rest of the masonry of quarry stone and the southern residential building in the upper area of half-timbered .

The square north-east tower shows a raised small residential building. A pointed arched door leads to the south-east tower from 1543, which was completed by Martin I von Thüngen (“built a lot on the old castle”). The south wall was heavily modified with inserted windows and the arched gate on the south-west tower was provided with corbels .

The castle complex is dominated by the square, five-story, 22-meter-high keep (12th century) made of humpback blocks with a side length of 8.50 meters and a high entrance to the castle courtyard that is 8.50 meters high .
