Old Castle (Rhineland-Palatinate)
Old castle

The old castle is the ruin of a medieval fortification in the Gimmeldingen district of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse in the Palatinate in Rhineland-Palatinate .

location

The ruins of the hilltop castle of the type of a motte (Turmhügerlburg) are located on the eastern edge of the former town center north of the Mußbach floodplain on the ridge of the Kieselberg, which belongs to the hills on the German Wine Road, at about 188  m above sea level. Above sea level. The location is about 1 km east of the Haardt mountain range . Since it was not the highest point of the hill, the castle did not provide a good all-round view; the view to the east into the Rhine plain was even completely blocked by the hilltop.

investment

The modest remains only give an idea of the main features of the complex. The remains of the foundations and walls of a double-chambered residential tower as well as the foundations of a massive keep , the area of which was 14.30 x 20 m with a wall thickness of 3.30 m, have been preserved.

history

The castle dates from the Salian period and was built in the late 11th or early 12th century. The castle was first mentioned at the end of the 14th century. Whether it ended in decay or destruction is as little known as the names of the lords of the castle. Because of the castle's not exposed location, historians suspect that administrative rather than security measures were taken from there.
