The Alte Burg or Alteburg , later also called Löpern Castle , is the ruin of a Spornburg near the municipality of Lipporn in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

location

The ruin of the castle is near Lipporn at the end of a steep 335  m above sea level. NHN high mountain spur above the Werkerbachtal in the Nastätter district , about 700 m away from the Lipporner Schanze .

The old castle (Alteburg) was probably the ancestral seat of the ancestors of the Counts of Nassau in the 11th century and served to secure trade routes. Only small remains of a circular wall and a rectangular keep can be seen of the former castle complex.
