The Old Evangelical Church in Oberkassel , part of the Beuel district of Bonn , was built as a parish church from 1683 to 1685 and rebuilt after its destruction in 1689 to 1698. It is located in the center of the village on the corner of Königswinterer Strasse and Zipperstrasse. The church building stands including surrounding grave stones as a monument under monument protection .

history

The church is the oldest Protestant church in the Bonn area and also one of the first Protestant churches in the Rhineland to be built after the Thirty Years' War . A Reformed clergyman was already at home in Oberkassel in 1555. The construction of the church building was supported financially by the affluent parishes on the Lower Rhine and in Brandenburg, which were already established at that time . The reformed parish of Oberkassel extended from Siegburg to Bad Honnef into the 18th century . During the siege of Bonn in 1689 , a large part of Oberkassel, including the Protestant church, was destroyed by French troops, so that of the church building only the surrounding walls and part of the roof structure remained. The reconstruction was financed by donations, it was carried out in almost unchanged form until 1698 using basalt stones from quarries in the area. The main portal of the church was relocated from what was then Hauptstrasse (today Königswinterer Strasse ) to Zipperstrasse. It was not given a new roof turret as a church tower until 1726. In 1760 painting and in 1821 repair work were carried out, including the pulpit . During a renovation in 1845, the roof turret lost its onion hood , and later also its clock. In 1883 the church building was renovated on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone.

In 1908, a new parish church was built in Oberkassel according to plans by Otto March , so that after a new roofing in 1911, the old church passed into the possession of the municipality of Oberkassel for an annual rent and subsequently served other purposes: during the First World War as a reading room for wounded soldiers from the local hospital , later as a food store. During the Second World War , the building was damaged by a shell hit, which was only followed by a makeshift renovation. A comprehensive restoration began in 1963, and after its completion, the building has been available to the parish again since February 10, 1972.

The Old Evangelical Church is a simple, plastered hall building on a rectangular floor plan with a high, slate-covered gable roof . There are two large arched windows on each of three sides and on the long side facing Zipperstrasse an arched door with an inscription and the year 1683, renewed in the 18th century. The interior is covered with a flat wooden barrel vault and covered with a tiled floor in a checkerboard pattern from more recent times; the seating offers 120 seats. Originally there were a number of grave slabs from the 17th and 18th centuries with partly destroyed coats of arms and inscriptions, which are now placed on the south and east sides of the building. The stained glass was created by Hermann Gottfried in 1966. The church has a small organ positive from the Johannes Klais company in Bonn.
