The old basalt quarry Steinbuckel is an extensive geological natural monument in the district of Ober-Ramstadt , city of Ober-Ramstadt, in the district of Darmstadt-Dieburg in southern Hesse.

location

The "Steinbuckel" is located on the southern edge of the Messeler Hügelland natural area on the border with the Vorderen Odenwald . The natural monument is located northwest of Ober-Ramstadt, about 50 meters north of the "Alte Ober-Ramstädter Straße", west of the Dippelshof and close to the tennis courts in Traisa . The protected parcel (corridor 31, no. 1) is called "Im burned Schlag" or "Der alten Bogen". The natural monument covers an area of about 0.243 hectares.

description

The "Steinbuckel" is a former nepheline - basalt - quarry . It is an old volcanic vent in which large blocks of the upcoming Rotliegend were lifted up by the lava. The quarry may already have been built by the Romans . At the end of the 19th century the chimney was still very well preserved, after the end of the dismantling it is no longer as pronounced. Even before 1932, this geological outcrop of unique quality was listed as a natural monument. Today it is protected by ordinance of May 4, 1938, published in the Hessian State Government Gazette No. 72 of May 10, 1938.

The basalt contains a lot of olivine . There are no basalt columns developed here near the volcanic vent , such as those found on Roßberg or Otzberg, for example . The stone blocks that were washed up are partially melted and fritted . Such inclusions stand out brightly against the surrounding black basalt.

In the dense mixed forest, many stone blocks are now overgrown with moss. Although it is forbidden in the natural monument, rock collectors repeatedly cut off parts of a large basalt block with inclusions.
