The Victoria of Wight is a ferry operated by the British shipping company Wightlink.

history

The ship was built under the hull number NB0052 at the Turkish shipyard Cemre Shipyard. The construction of the ship began with the first steel cut on October 4, 2016. The keel was laid in November 2017, the launch on February 7, 2018. The ship was completed in July 2018. Then the ferry was towed to Portsmouth (there are no cabins on board, so the ferry could not be transferred to Portsmouth on its own keel).

The ship was designed by the British naval architecture company Houlder. The construction cost was around £  30m.

The naming ceremony for the ferry, which went into service in August 2018, took place on September 20, 2018. Godmother was Sophie, Countess of Wessex . The ship is named in honor of Queen Victoria , who liked to stay on the Isle of Wight and who had a country estate in East Cowes with the Osborne House .

The ferry operates between Portsmouth and Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight. New ramps have been built in both ports to allow simultaneous loading and unloading on both vehicle decks of the ferry. The ramps have been available since July 2017 and have been used by St Clare , which also operates on the route since then .

Technical data and equipment

The ship is equipped with a hybrid drive consisting of a diesel-electric drive and accumulators . For electricity generation are four of Wärtsilä - diesel engines (type: 6L20) with 1200  kW power -driven generators. The generators feed lithium-ion batteries with 818  kWh . The accumulators are housed in two separate rooms. It is driven by four Voith-Schneider propellers driven by electric motors .

The original idea of operating the ship with liquefied natural gas was rejected because the infrastructure required for the supply of liquefied natural gas was not available in the ports called by the ferry and it was not worthwhile for the shipping company to build it themselves.

In normal operation, the power requirement is provided by a maximum of three diesel generators that are operated with constant power. The fourth diesel generator primarily serves as a reserve, so that the ship can continue to operate in the event of a failure of one of the diesel generators and the defective unit can be repaired without the ferry having to fail. The diesel generators are automatically started and switched on when the ship is in operation. If more energy is only required for a short time during operation, this is provided by the accumulators. The energy storage device is powerful enough to maintain shipboard operations in the port so that the diesel engines do not have to run during this time. To save energy, the kinetic energy of the elevator is used to generate electricity and the waste heat from the motors is used for hot water and heating.

The ship has a total of seven decks. Two of the decks are each continuous vehicle deck. These can be loaded and unloaded at the same time in the port. This shortens the idle time required for loading and unloading. For the lower vehicle deck, which is located on the main deck, there are fold-down ramps available at both ends of the ferry. The upper vehicle deck is served by landside ramps. The lower vehicle deck is complete, the upper one largely overbuilt. There is space for 178 cars on the vehicle decks, each with three lanes.

Above the vehicle decks there are two decks with facilities for passengers, including lounges with seating, a bistro, a kiosk, a play area for children and an area for passengers traveling with pets. In the rear area there are sun decks with seating. The passenger capacity of the ferry is 1170 people. The ship is equipped with four marine evacuation systems for emergencies .

Above the two passenger decks there is another deck with facilities for ship operations and the crew, as well as another sundeck with seating in the rear area. The bridge is slightly raised in the front area of ​​the ship. It is closed over the entire width. For a better overview, the cams extend slightly beyond the width of the ship.
