The St Clare ( written as St. Clare on the ship's side ) is a double-ended ferry built in 2001 by the British shipping company Wightlink. The ferry operates between Portsmouth and Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight .

history

The ship's design comes from the British naval architecture company Hart Fenton & Company. The ferry was built in 2001 under construction number 653 at the Polish shipyard Gdańska Stocznia "Remontowa" . The keel was laid on November 17, 2000, the launch in March 2001. The ferry was christened on April 26, 2001. The completion took place on July 6, 2001. The ferry was put into service on July 20, 2001. The cost of construction was £ 11.5 million .

The ferry operates on the route between Portsmouth and Fishbourne, which it initially served together with the two ferries St Cecilia and St Faith of the Saint class . The St Cecilia was replaced by the Victoria of Wight in 2018 .

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by four Wärtsilä - diesel engines (type: 5L20), each with 825  kW power driven. The motors act on four Voith-Schneider propellers via gears . Three generators powered by Scania diesel engines (type: D9), each with an output of 156 kW, are available to generate electricity . A fourth, identically configured generator set acts as an emergency generator.

The ship is equipped with three vehicle decks, one of which is a height-adjustable deck. The vehicle decks are interconnected with ramps. The lower vehicle deck on the main deck is a continuous deck. It is accessible from both ends of the ferry via fold-down ramps.

In February 2016, the upper car deck was extended to the entire length of the ship. Since the completion of the loading ramps in the two ports approached by the ferry in July 2017, landside ramps can be built and the ferry can be loaded and unloaded in parallel on the two fixed vehicle decks. With the simultaneous loading and unloading of both decks, the ferry can be cleared faster in the ports. The additional space on the upper car deck increased the ferry's vehicle capacity by around five percent. The vehicle capacity of the ferry is given as 186 cars.

The vehicle decks are largely covered by the superstructures with four other decks. Passenger facilities are located on three decks, including two decks with lounges with seating and a bistro. Above these two decks there are sun decks with additional seating for passengers. The ferry can carry a total of 878 passengers. The bridge is located in the midship area. It is equipped with closed cams , which go slightly beyond the width of the ship to improve the overview.
