location

The building is located at Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage 5–11 in the Gallus district . The associated 15,000 square meter property extends to the west between Mainzer Landstrasse in the south, Ludwigstrasse in the west and Hohenstaufenstrasse in the north. The Falkschule and the Protestant St. Matthew Church are adjacent to the property .

history

First police headquarters on the corner of Neue Zeil and Klingerstraße, around 1888

After the annexation of the Free City of Frankfurt by Prussia in 1866, the medieval Clesernhof , a no longer existing building complex on the Römer , served as the first police headquarters. In 1886 a new police headquarters was built on the former Klapperfeld on the Neue Zeil , the police custody of which was in operation until 2002. Because of the increasing spatial confinement on the Zeil, the (then) "New Royal Police Headquarters at Hohenzollernhof" was moved into in 1914 at what was then Hohenzollernplatz (today: Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage). It was built in a historical style in a mixture of neo-baroque and neoclassicism .

During the air raids on Frankfurt during World War II , almost half of the building was destroyed in 1944. Until the restoration in 1954, a large part of the police had been relocated to other locations in the city. In 2002 the Presidium moved into a new building on Adickesallee in the north end and gave up the location at the Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage. The building has been largely empty since then and is only partially used for commercial purposes. Today it is a cultural monument due to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .

In March 2018, the sale of the old police headquarters by the state of Hesse for 212.5 million euros to the Düsseldorf Gerchgroup was announced. The proceeds are to be invested in housing and education. The plan is to renovate the old building and a new ensemble of apartments (including 30 percent subsidized living), offices, a hotel, a daycare center and a gym for the Falkschule. Around 800 million euros are to be invested privately. An urban and architectural design is to be determined in a competition process with the participation of the City of Frankfurt. Construction is scheduled to start in 2022 and completion in 2026. Overall, the plot is over 15,000 m² in size on Friedrich-Ebert-Allee / Mainzer Landstrasse, which is also to be built with high-rise buildings. The sale of the area was preceded by a dispute over the sales price between the city of Frankfurt and the state of Hesse.
