The house at Altetopfstraße 21 was a listed building in the city of Quedlinburg in Saxony-Anhalt . A half- timbered replacement building is located at the same location today .

location

The building was located south of the historic Quedlinburg old town. A footpath runs east of the site over stairs to Wallstrasse to the north.

Architecture and history

The three-storey half-timbered house was built in the late 17th century. The half-timbering was designed in the style typical of Quedlinburg. So it had pyramid beam heads . The compartments were filled with bricks. The house was plastered in the 19th century. The building was demolished in the 20th century.

In 1992 a three-storey replacement building was erected at the same location. Unusually for its construction period, it is designed as a real half-timbered construction and largely takes up the dimensions of the previous building. The design of the facade deviated from the original approval and, at the request of the client, received various design elements from different periods of half-timbered construction. The design met with criticism from the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments , which feared that there could be a large number of imitators and that Quedlinburg could become an artificial facade made of buildings based on historical architectural styles. The construction of the new building was carried out in good quality and traditional craftsmanship. There is an inscription on the building that correctly chronicles the new building. The new building, which had a positive impact on the street scene, is seen today as a unique document of the post-reunification period, in which a half-timbered construction was possible again.

The Martha Schmalz textile goods store is located on the ground floor of the building (as of 2014).

The replacement building is not entered in the Quedlinburg monument register.
