Althorn is a district of Goetzenbruck and a former French commune in the Moselle department , in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

The hamlet is located in the south of the Bitscher Land , on the former border between Lorraine and Alsace . In the Lorraine regional language of the Bitscher Land, the Althorns are called Ratzer or Snot Boys .

geography

The Althorn district is located in the south-easternmost corner of the Goetzenbruck district , in the heart of the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park . It is traversed by the Breidenbach , which has its source at the Breitenstein and flows to Mouterhouse (German: Mutterhausen ). In addition to the core village, the Althorn also includes the districts of Schoenthal and Althorner Muehle . In the south, the Alsatian canton of Ingwiller is only a stone's throw away, but separated by a narrow strip of the Mouterhouse district.

Neighboring villages of Althorn are Meisenthal in the west, Goetzenbruck in the northwest, Mouterhouse in the northeast, Melch in the east, Wildenguth in the southeast, and the municipality of Wingen-sur-Moder (German: Wingen an der Moder ) in the south. After Bitche there are approximately 14 kilometers by Ingwiller about 17 km and after Saarbrücken about 50 kilometers.

history

The hamlet of Althorn was first mentioned as Horone marca in 783 . It belonged to the Weißenburg monastery . The place later fell desolate and was repopulated around the old chapel after the Thirty Years War . There used to be a castle of the Dukes of Lorraine here . In modern times, the village received a church. There you can see how old, prehistoric memories and relationships live on among the people: the little church that stood at the extreme limit of his diocese was consecrated to holy Chrodegang , the bishop of Metz . Althorn was assigned to the parish of Mouterhouse in 1810 after it had formed its own parish in 1790-1810. In 1837 Althorn again became the capital of a community with Saareinsberg or Königsberg as annexes, but already in 1838 it lost the community seat in favor of Saareinsberg. Both settlements have belonged to Goetzenbruck only since 1947 .
