The Alturas County was an American County in Idaho Territory and later the US state of Idaho of 1864 bis 1895 .

It extended over a larger area than the former states of Maryland , New Jersey and Delaware combined. Most of today's counties in southern Idaho are at least partially made up of the original Alturas County . The name Alturas comes from the Spanish word for "mountain peak" or "mountainous heights".

Alturas County was established by the Idaho Territory Parliament in February 1864. That same year, the mining camp was Rocky Bar on administrative headquarters ( the county seat ) of County made. 1882 was Hailey administrative headquarters.

In 1889, the Idaho Territory Parliament created Elmore County and the defunct Logan County from parts of Alturas County. Finally, on March 5, 1895, the Territory Parliament united Alturas and Logan Counties to form the new Blaine County . Two weeks later, on March 18, the southern part of Blaine County was created into the new Lincoln County with its administrative seat Shoshone . Hailey remained the administrative seat of Blaine County while Alturas County disappeared from the Idaho map.
