Neil Simon Theater
The Neil Simon Theater (250 West 52nd Street), also known by its former name, Alvin Theater , is a theater building on New York's Broadway that is primarily used for musical productions . The theater is on 52nd Street.
history
The building designed by the theater architect Herbert J. Krapp opened on November 22, 1927 as the Alvin Theater . The first play was the musical Funny Face with the siblings Fred and Adele Astaire . From the 1930s to the mid 1940s, CBS used the theater as a radio studio in addition to its regular theater operations. 1935 celebrated there the opera Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin 's premiere . In 1977 the theater was bought by the Shubert Organization . In 1983 the theater was named after the playwright Neil Simonrenamed. In 2002 the musical Hairspray celebrated its world premiere. Today the theater is run by the Nederlander Organization . The theater has 1445 seats.
