Always Say Goodbye is a jazz album by Charlie Haden and his Quartet West, recorded in 1993 and released on Verve .

background

Always Say Goodbye is a tribute by Haden and the Quartet West to the Hollywood productions and jazz of the 1930s and 1940s. The album begins and ends with excerpts from the Howard Hawks film The Big Sleep from 1946. “The record begins and ends with dialogues from one of my favorite films: The Big Sleep. I would have loved to be on the set, had met Raymond Chandler , played with Bird , Chet and Larance at Trade Winds in Los Angeles. .. Somehow the music usually carries me there. ”The title track is a composition by Haden, which through Broadbents piano solo shapes the nostalgic mood of the album.

The album often uses the trick of playing a piece by the Quartet West first and then fading into the original. When it comes to the title Où es-tu mon amour? (Where Are You, My Love?) Plays Stephane Grappelli first with the Quartet West, then displayed the piece in a version of the same piece from 1949 on, the Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli with an Italian rhythm section in Rome recorded had.

“Always Say Goodbye is part of the continuing Quartet West project by Haden, in which the venerable bassist attempts to evoke the spirit of Hollywood circa 1930-1940 ... The results, though at first a little bit unsettling, are quite spectacular .. . Highly recommended. "
