Am Keilstein is an approximately 46 hectare nature reserve belonging to the city of Regensburg in the east of Regensburg, Bavaria . The protected area includes the southern slopes of the Keilstein facing the Danube and is a retreat area for particularly warm and drought-loving animal and plant species. There are also plant species that have migrated from the steppe areas of Eastern Europe via the Danube Valley. To the north, the protected area adjoins the nature reserve southeastern Jura foothills near Regensburg , to the west the Keilberg limestone quarry, the outer boundaries of which have been established since 1998. In the east of the area lies the geological fault line Tegernheimer Schlucht , which here separates the Franconian Jura from the crystalline basement of the Bavarian Forest .
The large rock is designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as Geotope 362R002. See also the list of geotopes in Regensburg . The nature reserve is part of the fauna-flora-habitat area dry slopes near Regensburg (FFH no. 6938-301; WDPA no. 555521762).
