Gerhard von Breuning (born August 28, 1813 in Vienna ; † May 6, 1892 there ) was an Austrian doctor and medical researcher .

Life

Breuning was born out of wedlock to Beethoven's long-time friend Stephan von Breuning and Constanze von Ruschowitz. For unknown reasons, the parents did not get married until February 18, 1817. His father's sister, Eleonore von Breuning , was also friends with Beethoven in her youth, as was her husband Franz Gerhard Wegeler .

Through his father around 1826 he came into close contact with the composer, who called him his "Ariel" and "Hosenknopf". He wrote valuable memoirs about these encounters in 1872, which are an important source of Beethoven research.

He was also an important Viennese doctor, surgeon and medical writer.

Breuning was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
