Anton Schindler

Anton Felix Schindler (born June 13, 1795 in Meedl / Moravia (today Medlov u Uničova ), † January 16, 1864 in Bockenheim ) was an Austrian musician and music writer.

Life

Schindler attended grammar school in Olomouc and studied law and philosophy at the University of Vienna from autumn 1813 . In 1817 he took a job in the law firm of the lawyer Dr. Johann Baptist Bach (1779–1847), who became Beethoven's legal advisor in 1819. From 1822 Schindler was first violinist and orchestra director at the Josephstädter Theater , from 1825 to 1827 in the same position at the Kärntnertor Theater . From autumn 1827 to spring 1829 he lived with his sister in Pest , then from 1832 worked as music director in Münster and from 1835 to 1840 both as music director of the Aachen symphony orchestra and as collegiate conductor at Aachen cathedral . In 1841/42 he stayed in Paris , in 1843 in Berlin , and from 1848 lived in Frankfurt am Main and in Bockenheim .

Schindler's fame is based primarily on his acquaintance with Ludwig van Beethoven . He met him in the fall of 1822 and took on secretary services for him. He also became the composer's first biographer. His Beethoven biography was published in 1840 and expanded in 1860. It is considered very unreliable, as Schindler likes to focus on himself. His claim that he was Beethoven's friend can hardly be reconciled with the facts. In order to support it, he did not shrink from making subsequent entries in Beethoven's conversation notebooks and forging other documents.

In addition, Schindler wrote several compositions, including songs, piano works, a string quartet and two masses for choir and orchestra. His Mass No. 1 in D minor , which was premiered in December 1837 in Aachen , was particularly successful . The Aachen correspondent for the Berlinische Nachrichten reported:

"Aachen. A new large mass by the concertmaster Schindler, in the performance of which all musicians and music lovers participated, caused a great sensation, namely the Credo, which was widely admired. "

Another performance followed on November 4, 1839 in the Karlskirche in Vienna . Schindler dedicated the mass to Pope Gregory XVI. , who accepted the dedication before the Vienna performance. In a report from Düsseldorf in November 1839 it says:

"(Düsseldorf.) The Pope has accepted the dedication of a mass by our music director Schindler, and the director of the papal chapel is said to have asked the master to send a second mass to Rome which he composed."

This attracted a lot of attention in the press at the time, because "the work of a German composer has never been performed in St. Peter's Church in Rome ." It is not known whether Giuseppe Baini , the conductor of the papal chapel, actually performed Schindler's mass in St.
