The Amanda is a passenger ferry that runs on the Weser at river kilometer 190.7 between Rehme on the west bank and the Great Weserbogen on the east bank.
history
The ferry was initially used under the name Wilhelmshausen as a car ferry on the Fulda near Wilhelmshausen . Built in 1928, she was then converted into a motor ship. In 1988 it was bought by the Großer Weserbogen mbH , converted into a passenger and cyclist ferry and put into service on the Großer Weserbogen.
Somewhat south of today's ferry location, between Vössen and Babbenhausen ( Bad Oeynhausen ), a ferry has been found from the end of the 19th century. The Vössen ferry was a low cable ferry from 1926, later a high cable ferry until 1956 .
In 2011, due to the low water on the Weser in the spring months, the ferry was not able to return to the water with its own strength; the ferry would have run aground during the immersion process. The return to the water then succeeded with the help of a crane that was brought to the site on floating pontoons of the Bundeswehr .
technology
After the conversion, the ferry will be powered by a three-cylinder diesel engine with 48 hp , which acts on two Schottel rudder propellers . This means that the drive is also the rudder and it is possible that the ferry can turn on the spot.
meaning
The ferry, which has been in use since 1988, was planned for the development of the eastern bank of the Weser on the opposite side of the Rehme district. It shortens the way across the river for pedestrians and cyclists and thus makes a decisive contribution to the accessibility of the leisure area Großer Weserbogen on the east bank of the Weser. Alternatively, the Weser can be crossed over the motorway bridge in the direction of the Ruhr area (there is a bike / footpath there). Two municipalities have worked together here because the Weser forms the border between the towns of Bad Oeynhausen on the left side of the Weser and Porta Westfalica on the right side of the Weser. The Amanda ferry has gained regional importance as a leisure activity.
