Amblystegium , also sometimes called butt-capped moss in German, is a genus of moss .

description

The plants of the genus grow with irregularly branched stems in delicate to moderately robust lawns.

The leaves are only 0.5 to 1.5 mm long and lanceolate to heart-shaped / ovoid in shape. A leaf vein always exists and extends at least to the front half of the leaf, often to the tip of the leaf. The cells of the leaf blade are elongated and two to six times as long as they are wide. The leaf wing cells are not particularly differentiated.

The cylindrical capsule is slightly curved. There is a narrowest point clearly below the capsule opening.

distribution

The genus is distributed worldwide. Most species grow in shady, not too dry places, for example at the bottom of trees or in bushes on various surfaces (wood, rock, earth).

European species

Forms of Amblystegium serpens with a serrated leaf base are also called a separate species Amblystegium juratzkanum chimp. severed. In general, the delimitation of many species of the genus is very difficult and there are many synonyms .

Earlier, the species Leptodictyum riparium was also counted as Amblystegium riparium (Hedw.) BSG in this genus.
