Ambovombe or Ambovombe-Androy ( where there are large trenches ) is a municipality on the coast in southern Madagascar . The town is the seat of the region Androy and the eponymous district Ambovombe .

Geography and population

The place is about 110 km west of Tolagnaro on the national road 13 between Ihosy and Tolagnaro. The town's name derives from the numerous traditional fountains from which are located in the urban area, while the surrounding area is very dry and there is no running water.

The municipal area covers 679 square kilometers, on which for 2006 a population of about 65,000 people was estimated, which is spread over 58 villages. In the urban area of ​​Ambovombe, only 18,328 inhabitants were estimated for 2004. The population consists mostly of Tandroy , in addition, Betsileo and Tanosy settle in the area of ​​Ambovombes .

history

The orally transmitted legend that a certain Rangoike from the Ntesevohitse clan found water in this place and then founded a village called Ambovontany is linked to the founding of Ambovombes. In 1900 a military post of the French colonial power was set up in Ambovombe, in 1917 Evangelical missionaries came and began building a church, which was completed in 1928. The Lazarists consecrated their church as early as 1921 .

In the Ambovombe area, the main crops are corn , cassava and sweet potatoes , and to a lesser extent peanuts and black peas .

education

Ambovombe has 44 elementary schools and four middle schools, one of which is a Lycée . In 2013 the foundation stone was laid for the secondary educational institution called Center Universitaire Régional d'Androy , which is located four kilometers outside the city in the rural municipality of Ankilibevoa . In the city there is an Alliance Française school with around 500 members, 50 active participants in French courses and a library with around 4,500 volumes.
