Ambrose Lansing
Ambrose Lansing (born September 20, 1891 in Egypt , † May 28, 1959 in Apache Junction , Arizona ) was an American Egyptologist and anthropologist .
Life
Lansing studied at Columbia University in New York City and with Georg Steindorff at Leipzig University . In 1911 he became an employee of the Egypt department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which had only been founded five years earlier . He worked first as a participant and later as a leader in several campaigns in the excavations of the museum at the Sesostris I pyramid in Lischt and in the Theban necropolis , on which he published numerous articles, mainly in the Bulletin of the Metropolitan Museum of Art . In 1939 he succeeded Herbert E. Winlock as curator of the Egypt department of the Metropolitan Museum. In 1944 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 1952 he retired. Lansing died in 1959 at the age of 67.
