action
Jack Kelson , played by Jeff Bridges, is a petty criminal who resolves to lead a law-abiding life after years in prison. He travels to Seattle , where he has a pen pal he met through the prison inmate pen pal magazine American Heart . His son Nick , played by Edward Furlong, grew up separately from him on a farm and travels after him, which Jack does not like. They move into a small apartment and Jack takes a job as a window cleaner while his son Nick roams the street, making friends with hustlers and teenage petty criminals. For Jack Nick is just a block on the leg, but he still tries carefully to develop a relationship with him. At the same time, he meets regularly with his pen pal Charlotte .
After an argument, Nick runs away from home and runs into Jack's former accomplice Rainey , played by Don Harvey. This persuades him to break in, in which Nick's accomplice is shot. When Jack meets Nick again, he decides to make his long-cherished dream come true and to go to Alaska with him. He instructs his son to buy tickets and wait for him on the ferry. Then he goes to Rainey, beats him up and takes his money. Rainey follows him to the ship and shoots Jack. This is so badly injured that he dies on the ferry in the arms of his son.

The melancholy, but not sentimental film describes the process of the difficult rapprochement between two sensitive people, hardened by experiences in a hostile environment, with calm and accuracy and largely avoids clichés.
